3 Days Tour from Marrakech to the Sahara: Erg Chigaga Dunes, Atlas Mountains and Berber Culture
Where ancient mountains meet boundless desert and the night sky becomes your ceiling.
This 3-day tour from Marrakech to the Sahara crosses the High Atlas via the Tizi-n-Tichka pass, descends through Berber villages and date-palm oases, and culminates in an overnight stay at a deluxe camp among the remote Erg Chigaga dunes. It is rated Easy and is well suited to travellers who want an immersive desert experience without technical difficulty.
The route covers roughly 1,000 kilometres in total, moving through dramatically different terrain each day: alpine passes and cedar forests on day one, open desert piste and Anti-Atlas canyons on day two, and the UNESCO-listed ksar of Aït-Ben-Haddou and the Atlas Studios film complex on the return journey on day three. Each landscape offers a distinct chapter of Morocco's geography and history.
Throughout the three days, the itinerary integrates hands-on cultural encounters. Guests can participate in bread baking, tajine preparation, pottery, or traditional carpet weaving in Berber villages, and interact directly with Sahrawi communities in the deep south. These experiences are embedded in the schedule rather than added as optional extras.
The desert camp at Erg Chigaga is positioned well away from the more commercially developed dunes near Merzouga, providing a sense of genuine remoteness. Tents are equipped with double or twin beds, a private shower, and toilet facilities, making the overnight stay comfortable without sacrificing the atmosphere of the open Sahara.
