Itinerary
The half-day tour leaves from Ponta Delgada by 4x4 jeep, in a small group with a driver/guide. The route heads toward Lagoa do Fogo, where you take in the lake's tranquil shores and the blue tones of the surrounding natural reserve. From there the tour continues to Salto do Cabrito waterfall and on to Caldeiras da Ribeira Grande, an area that shows signs of the island's volcanic activity, with some hiking along the way. A stop at Caldeira Velha follows, where a geothermal-heated waterfall and natural pool offer an optional swim, though entry is not included in the tour price. Throughout the drive your guide shares local insight on the landscape, culture and cuisine of the Azores before the return to Ponta Delgada.
Before you go
Pick-up and drop-off from your hotel or a designated meeting point in Ponta Delgada is included, along with a driver/guide for the small group tour. Entrance fees for thermal pools and natural parks, including Caldeira Velha, are not included and should be arranged separately if you plan to swim. A minimum of 2 people per booking is required. Bring comfortable shoes for walking, plus a bathing suit and towel in case you choose to visit Caldeira Velha. For cancellations, a full refund or credit is given with 24 hours notice, and also if the operator cancels due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances; no-shows are charged the full price.
