Full-Day Jeep Tour and Kayak — Sete Cidades
Into the crater, across the lake — a full-day immersion in one of the Azores' most spectacular volcanic landscapes.
This Sete Cidades jeep and kayak tour combines an off-road exploration of the caldera's rugged rim with a kayak adventure on the iconic twin lakes below, all guided by a local expert who knows every trail and viewpoint.
The morning unfolds across the volcanic highland interior, where a 4WD vehicle navigates dirt tracks that conventional transport simply cannot reach. Stops at panoramic viewpoints reveal the caldera's full scale, a landscape shaped by ancient eruptions and softened over centuries by Atlantic mist and dense hydrangea hedges.
After a locally sourced lunch, the focus shifts to the water. A kayak session on the Sete Cidades lakes offers a ground-level perspective that no viewpoint can replicate, with the caldera walls rising on all sides. The contrast between the morning's elevated panoramas and the afternoon's immersive paddle is one of the tour's defining qualities.
Throughout the day, the guide shares knowledge of local ecology, geological history, and Azorean cultural traditions, ensuring the experience goes well beyond sightseeing.

Itinerary
The day begins with pick-up from your hotel or a designated meeting point. The group transfers to the Sete Cidades area on the western end of São Miguel island.
The jeep climbs to Pico do Carvão for a sweeping aerial view over the caldera. The route then follows the Cumeeiras dirt road along the rim, accessing terrain that only 4WD vehicles can navigate.
A stop at the Santiago lake viewpoint frames the caldera's twin lakes from above. The group continues through the Canário and Empadadas lake areas before descending into the crater.
The tour passes through the village of Sete Cidades, a small community living inside the caldera. A local lunch is served, included in the tour price.
The afternoon is dedicated to paddling on the Sete Cidades lakes with kayak equipment provided. The caldera walls surround the group as they explore the lake's surface at water level.
