Abu Simbel Day Trip from Aswan
Witness the rock-carved legacy of Ramses II on the shores of Lake Nasser
This Abu Simbel day trip from Aswan takes you to one of ancient Egypt's most remarkable archaeological sites, where two colossal rock-hewn temples stand as enduring monuments to pharaonic power. The journey covers roughly 280 kilometres each way through the Nubian desert, making the early departure well worth the distance.
Both temples were nearly lost to history when the construction of the Aswan High Dam threatened to submerge them beneath the rising waters of Lake Nasser. In one of the most ambitious heritage rescue operations ever undertaken, UNESCO and the Egyptian government coordinated the relocation of the entire complex between 1964 and 1968, dismantling and reassembling the temples block by block on higher ground.
The Great Temple was commissioned by Ramses II primarily to celebrate his military campaigns, most notably the Battle of Kadesh. Its interior walls carry detailed murals of that engagement, offering a vivid record of New Kingdom warfare and royal self-promotion. The smaller temple nearby was dedicated to the goddess Hathor and to Queen Nefertari, Ramses II's most favoured consort.
Travel to and from the site is handled by a private, air-conditioned vehicle, ensuring comfort across the full day. A knowledgeable guide accompanies the group throughout, providing historical and cultural context at each point of interest.
