Double Dive in the Archaeological Park of Baia
Descend into the submerged ruins of a Roman city that emperors once called home.
The underwater archaeological park of Baia is one of the most extraordinary dive destinations in the world, where ancient Roman mosaics, statues, and marble floors rest preserved beneath the surface of the Tyrrhenian Sea. This four-hour experience includes two guided dives, each following a dedicated visit route through the ruins, led by a certified Divemaster at your side throughout. Open to all certified divers holding at least an Open Water Diver qualification or equivalent, the experience balances historical discovery with accessible, well-supported diving.
Baia was once the preferred retreat of Roman emperors and senators, a coastal city renowned for luxury and thermal baths. The volcanic phenomenon known as bradyseism caused the ground beneath the city to gradually sink, leaving entire villa complexes submerged at a depth of roughly four meters. The sea has acted as an unlikely guardian, keeping the structures intact for modern divers to explore.
Before entering the water, participants attend a dedicated briefing covering the history of Baia and the specific dive sites on the day's itinerary. The Archaeological Park divides the submerged area into distinct visit routes, each designed to last around 45 minutes, ensuring a structured and unhurried exploration. Dive equipment is available to hire on site, so certified divers need only bring a swimsuit and a towel.
After both dives, the group returns to the diving centre, where showers and changing rooms are available. The Divemaster can certify the dives in your logbook with a stamp unique to this site, a practical and memorable record of an experience that is genuinely difficult to replicate anywhere else in the world.

How the Day Unfolds
Participants arrive at the diving centre in Baia, where the team conducts a briefing on the history of the Roman city and the specific dive routes planned for the session. Equipment checks and any gear rental are handled at this stage.
The group boards a boat for a short five-minute crossing to the entrance of the underwater Archaeological Park of Baia. The Divemaster provides final instructions before the first descent.
The first 45-minute dive follows a designated visit route through the submerged remains of Roman villas, taking in mosaics, marble pavements, and sculpted elements preserved by the sea. The Divemaster guides the group and remains alongside every participant throughout.
After the first dive, the group surfaces for a rest period on the boat. This interval allows time for surface interval decompression and a chance to discuss what was observed below.
The second 45-minute dive follows a separate route within the park, revealing additional sections of the ancient city. The variety between routes ensures a broader picture of the submerged site across both dives.
The boat returns to the diving centre, where showers and changing facilities are available. The Divemaster signs logbooks and the team typically offers refreshments to close the experience.
