Double Snorkeling in the Archaeological Park of Baia

Two dive sites, one journey through an ancient Roman city preserved beneath the sea

This snorkeling experience in the Archaeological Park of Baia grants you direct access to one of the most unusual underwater sites in the world, where ancient Roman villas, mosaic floors, and marble statues rest just a few meters below the surface. No license is required, and participants as young as seven years old are welcome to join.

The city of Baia was once the most fashionable resort of the Roman Empire, frequented by emperors and senators who built lavish villas along its coast. Centuries of bradyseism, the gradual rise and fall of the ground driven by volcanic activity in the Phlegrean Fields, caused much of the ancient city to sink slowly beneath the sea, where it has remained remarkably intact ever since.

During this tour you will visit two separate dive sites within the restricted zone of the Archaeological Park, spending approximately 45 minutes in the water at each location. Trained guides accompany every swimmer throughout the experience, ensuring both safety and a deeper understanding of what lies beneath the surface.

Tour Highlights

Snorkel over submerged Roman villas, ancient mosaics, and marble floors lying approximately four meters underwater.

Visit two distinct dive sites within the Archaeological Park of Baia in a single outing.

Receive a full safety briefing and all necessary equipment from certified instructors before entering the water.

Swim alongside a variety of colourful Mediterranean fish that have made the ancient ruins their home.

No diving license required, making this experience accessible to beginners and families with children aged seven and above.

Travel by small boat directly into the restricted archaeological zone, an area not accessible to casual swimmers.

Do I need a diving license to join this tour?
No license of any kind is required. This is a snorkeling experience open to anyone aged seven and above who is comfortable swimming in the sea.
What equipment will be provided?
The Diving Center provides all snorkeling equipment, including mask, fins, and wetsuit. You only need to bring a swimming suit, a towel, and a change of clothes if you wish.
How deep is the water above the Roman ruins?
The submerged Roman structures at the Archaeological Park of Baia lie at a depth of approximately four meters, making them well suited for snorkeling without the need for diving equipment.
How much time will I actually spend in the water?
You will spend approximately 45 minutes in the water at each of the two dive sites, for a total of roughly 90 minutes of active snorkeling across the full tour.
Why is the Roman city of Baia underwater?
The city sank gradually due to bradyseism, a volcanic phenomenon of the Phlegrean Fields that causes the ground level to rise and fall over time. Over centuries, the coastline dropped enough for the ancient villas and streets to become submerged.
Are children allowed on the tour?
Yes. The minimum age is seven years old. Children must be comfortable swimming in open water, and guides are present throughout the experience to assist all participants.
