Double Discover Scuba Diving in the Submerged Archaeological Park of Baia
Two consecutive guided dives through an ancient Roman city resting four metres beneath the sea, no certification required.
The Discover Scuba Diving Baia experience introduces first-time divers to one of the most extraordinary underwater archaeological sites on earth, the partially submerged Roman city of Baia, preserved by the sea for nearly two millennia. No prior diving licence is required, and participants as young as ten years old can take part under full PADI-standard supervision.
Baia was once the most fashionable resort of the Roman Empire, favoured by emperors and senators alike for its thermal waters and coastal villas. The geological phenomenon known as bradyseism, caused by the volcanic activity of the Phlegrean Fields, gradually lowered the land level over centuries, placing entire sections of the city roughly four metres beneath the surface of the Bay of Pozzuoli.
The sea has acted as an exceptional preservative, leaving ancient mosaics, marble floors, statues and structural walls largely intact. Diving here means swimming through rooms that once housed the Roman elite, now colonised by marine life that coexists with the archaeology in a way found nowhere else in the world.
This programme includes two separate but consecutive dives, each lasting approximately 45 minutes, following official visit routes authorised by the Archaeological Park of Baia. PADI-certified instructors remain physically beside each participant throughout both dives, and the experience is formally recognised as the first qualifying dive of a PADI Open Water Diver course at any affiliated centre worldwide.

How the Day Unfolds
After booking, participants receive a medical assessment form and a brief e-learning module covering the fundamentals of diving. Completing these before arrival allows the in-person session to focus on practical skills.
On arrival, instructors lead a structured classroom session covering equipment, basic diving principles and underwater behaviour. This session ensures every participant has the knowledge needed to dive safely and confidently.
All necessary equipment is provided and fitted at the diving centre. The group then transfers by boat to the Archaeological Park of Baia, a short journey across the bay.
The first guided dive follows an authorised park route at approximately four metres depth, exploring Roman structures, mosaics and statuary. Instructors remain at the participant's side throughout the entire dive.
After a surface interval, the group descends at a second distinct dive site within the park, discovering additional Roman features and marine life. Each dive lasts approximately 45 minutes.
The boat returns to the diving centre, where showers and changing rooms are available. The instructor formally logs the completed dives, which count toward a PADI Open Water Diver qualification worldwide.
