Dive the Sunken Roman City of Baia: Archaeological Park Guided Scuba Experience
Descend into the ancient world beneath the waves of the Phlegrean Fields, where Rome's most opulent resort city waits four metres below the surface.
A scuba dive in the Archaeological Park of Baia is one of the rarest cultural experiences available to certified divers anywhere in the Mediterranean, placing you face-to-face with imperial mosaics, marble floors and intact Roman statuary in their original positions on the seafloor.
The ancient city of Baia was the preferred retreat of Roman emperors and senators, celebrated for its thermal baths and luxury villas that lined the volcanic coast. Over centuries, the geological phenomenon known as bradyseism gradually lowered the ground level of the entire Phlegrean Fields area, slowly submerging the coastal buildings until they came to rest roughly four metres beneath the surface of the Bay of Naples.
Today the sea has acted as a natural preservative, protecting mosaic pavements, sculptural fragments and architectural structures that remain largely intact. The Archaeological Park manages the site through dedicated visit routes, each designed to be completed in approximately 45 minutes, ensuring both conservation of the ruins and a focused, unhurried experience for divers.
Your Divemaster accompanies you throughout the dive, providing continuous guidance and contextual information about the structures you pass. After surfacing, the diving centre offers showers, changing rooms and the chance to have the dive logged and stamped in your logbook with the centre's distinctive archaeological stamp.
