Terceira Island Short Break: Self-Drive, Whale Watching and Island Discovery
Four days of volcanic landscapes, Atlantic wildlife and authentic Azorean culture at your own pace.
This Terceira Island self-drive tour invites you to explore one of the Atlantic's most distinctive volcanic islands across four unhurried days, combining the freedom of a rental car with expert-guided experiences on land and at sea.
Terceira, nicknamed the Lilac Island, balances raw volcanic scenery with a UNESCO-listed historic city centre in Angra do Heroismo. The island's compact size makes it ideal for self-drive exploration, allowing you to set your own rhythm between guided excursions and independent discovery.
A full-day guided island tour aboard a shared van takes you to the island's most celebrated viewpoints and natural sites, while a dedicated whale watching excursion brings you face to face with the rich marine life that makes the Azores one of the premier cetacean observation destinations in the Atlantic.
The itinerary also weaves in local gastronomy, including a traditional Alcatra dinner and a cheese tasting at a working dairy, giving you a grounded sense of what daily life on this island actually tastes like.
Tour Highlights
Walk through the UNESCO World Heritage historic centre of Angra do Heroismo, including the Cathedral da Se and Rua Direita.
Whale watching in the Azores, rated among the best cetacean observation zones in the entire Atlantic Ocean.
Full-day guided island tour covering both coasts, volcanic interior sites and the iconic Serra do Cume patchwork landscape.
Visit Algar do Carvao and Furnas do Enxofre, two remarkable sites that reveal the island's ongoing volcanic activity.
Taste the traditional D. Amelia tarts in Angra and savour a classic Alcatra pot roast dinner at a local restaurant.
Watch the sun set over Angra do Heroismo from the elevated vantage point of Monte Brasil Natural Reserve.
Full self-drive flexibility with a rental car, travel documents and a meet-and-greet service upon arrival at Terceira Airport.
Itinerary
A tour representative meets you at Terceira Airport, where you collect your rental car and travel documents. After settling into your hotel, explore Angra do Heroismo on foot, taking in the Cathedral da Se, Jardim Duque da Terceira and Teatro Angrense before driving to Monte Brasil for sunset views over the city.
Board a shared van for a comprehensive circuit of Terceira, stopping at Monte Brasil, Praia da Vitoria, Serra do Facho and the panoramic Serra do Cume viewpoint. The afternoon takes you inland to Algar do Carvao, Furnas do Enxofre, the village of Biscoitos and a cheese tasting at the Vaqinha dairy factory, with lunch at a local restaurant included.
An early breakfast precedes a morning whale watching excursion departing at around 08:30, offering approximately three hours at sea with the chance to observe whales, dolphins, turtles and marine birds in their natural habitat. The afternoon is free, and the evening ends with a traditional Alcatra dinner included at a local restaurant.
After a final breakfast at the hotel, drive back to Terceira Airport at your own pace to drop off the rental car and board your return flight.
