Algarve, Alentejo & Andalucia Self-Drive: 11-Day Iberian Journey
From Atlantic cliffs and Moorish fortresses to Roman ruins and Seville's grand plazas — drive your own story across three remarkable regions.
This Algarve Alentejo Andalucia self-drive tour takes you through eleven days of layered history, coastal scenery, and inland culture across southern Portugal and Spain. Beginning and ending at Faro International Airport, the route traces a wide arc through landscapes that range from dramatic Atlantic sea cliffs to sun-bleached Alentejo plains and the ornate streets of Seville.
The itinerary is structured for independent travellers who prefer the freedom of the wheel over the rigidity of group transport. Each day opens a new chapter: Moorish castles, UNESCO-listed historic centres, Roman amphitheatres, and fishing harbours where the morning catch still sets the restaurant menu.
Difficulty is rated very easy, making this tour accessible to a broad range of travellers, including those with limited walking ability. Roads between destinations are well-maintained, distances are manageable, and accommodations are positioned in or near town centres for convenience.
The multi-country format means you cross from Portugal into Spain mid-tour, passing through the fortified border town of Elvas before entering Extremadura and eventually Andalucia. The return leg brings you back through the eastern Algarve, closing the loop in Faro.
Tour Highlights
Cabo São Vicente, the southwestern tip of continental Europe, offers unobstructed views of the Atlantic and a 16th-century fortress once built to repel Moorish pirates. The cape is steeped in legend from Portugal's Age of Discoveries.
Sagres Fortress stands as a physical record of 15th-century maritime ambition. The promontory is associated with Prince Henry the Navigator and the expeditions that reshaped global geography.
Costa Vicentina stretches along the Alentejo coastline with surf beaches, secluded coves, and a protected natural park that has kept commercial development at bay. The village of Zambujeira do Mar is a quiet standout.
Evora's UNESCO-listed historic centre compresses two thousand years of history into a walkable walled city. Roman temple columns, a medieval cathedral, and the eerie Chapel of Bones all sit within the same few streets.
Elvas holds the distinction of containing the largest bulwarked fortification in the world. The town played a decisive role in Portugal's 17th-century wars of independence and later served as a base for Wellington during the Napoleonic campaigns.
Merida, capital of Extremadura, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. Its Roman theatre, amphitheatre, and bridge are among the best-preserved ancient Roman structures on the Iberian Peninsula.
Seville's Royal Alcazar, Gothic cathedral, and Plaza de España occupy three full days of the itinerary. The city's Santa Cruz quarter, its covered markets, and the Metropol Parasol add contemporary depth to a city defined by centuries of layered culture.
Itinerary Overview
Arrive at Faro Airport, collect your rental car, and settle into the Algarve capital with its Moorish old town, sea-facing cafes, and centuries-old city walls. On day two, drive west along the coast through Carvoeiro, Silves, Ferragudo, and Alvor before checking in to your hotel in Lagos.
Day three traces the route of Portugal's Age of Discoveries from Lagos through Ponta da Piedade, Cabo São Vicente, and Sagres, continuing north along the coast to Aljezur and Zambujeira do Mar, with an overnight in Grândola. Day four takes in Comporta beach and the photogenic wooden wharf at Carrasqueira before arriving in Evora for a two-night stay.
Depart Evora via Estremoz, the marble-white market town, and continue to Elvas, the great fortified border city. Cross into Spain, visiting Badajoz's Alcazaba and the Roman ruins of Merida before an overnight in Caceres. The following morning departs Caceres for Zafra before continuing south to Seville.
Three nights in Seville allow time to explore the Royal Alcazar, the Cathedral and Giralda tower, Plaza de España, Maria Luisa Park, and the Metropol Parasol. A day excursion on day eight covers Jerez de la Frontera, with its sherry bodegas and Moorish fortress, and the ancient port city of Cadiz, one of Europe's oldest continuously inhabited settlements.
Leave Seville for Huelva, the city from which Columbus departed for the Americas in 1492, then visit Isla Cristina, a working fishing port with marshland nature reserves and broad Atlantic beaches. End the day with an overnight in Tavira on the Portuguese side of the border.
Spend the final morning exploring Tavira's Roman bridge, Moorish-influenced architecture, and tiled townhouses, then pass through Olhão, the Algarve's busiest fishing port, before returning to Faro Airport to drop off the rental car and depart.
