Half-Day Whale and Dolphin Watching in the Azores
Encounter wild marine mammals in their natural habitat off the coast of Ilha Terceira
This whale watching Azores experience gives you the chance to observe up to 27 species of cetaceans in open Atlantic waters, guided by a professional team of skippers, biologists, and trained coastal lookouts. With a 99% sighting success rate, Picos de Aventura sets the standard for responsible marine wildlife encounters in the region. The journey departs from Marina de Angra on Terceira Island and lasts approximately three hours.
Before boarding, guests attend a thorough briefing covering cetacean biology, observation protocols, safety procedures, and the Azores whale watching code of ethics. This preparation ensures that every participant understands both the science and the responsibility involved in approaching wild marine mammals. The session is led by qualified marine biologists who accompany every voyage.
Coastal vigias — traditional shore-based spotters positioned along the south coast of the island — relay real-time sightings to the boat crew, maximizing time spent with animals rather than searching open water. This method, inherited from the Azores whaling era, is now used exclusively for non-invasive observation. The result is an efficient, respectful, and genuinely rewarding experience on the water.
The Atlantic waters surrounding Terceira host resident populations of common and bottlenose dolphins alongside seasonal visits from sperm whales, fin whales, and blue whales. Each trip differs depending on season and sea conditions, offering a genuinely wild encounter rather than a scripted performance. Participants are encouraged to ask questions throughout the outing.

What to Expect
Guests gather at the marina in Angra do Heroismo, where the team registers participants and provides initial instructions. Arriving a few minutes early is recommended to allow time for paperwork and equipment checks.
A marine biologist conducts a structured briefing covering cetacean species, behavioral cues, safety rules, and ethical observation guidelines. This session equips participants with the context needed to fully appreciate what they are about to witness.
The vessel departs the marina and heads toward areas identified by coastal vigias monitoring the south coast. The crew maintains radio contact with lookouts throughout the journey to adjust course as new sightings are reported.
Once animals are located, the skipper positions the boat at a respectful distance in accordance with Azorean regulations. Guests observe dolphins and whales surfacing, breaching, and socializing while the biologist provides live commentary on species identification and behavior.
After the observation period, the vessel returns to Marina de Angra. The team is available for questions and can share information about upcoming departures or complementary activities on the island.
