Discover Madeira: 8-Day Self-Drive Island Tour
Eight days of emerald coastlines, mountain passes, and island culture at your own pace.
This Madeira self-drive tour invites you to uncover the full breadth of the island over eight unhurried days, from dramatic volcanic cliffs and lush laurel forests to sun-warmed fishing villages and aromatic local markets. You navigate at your own rhythm, with a rental car as your key to every hidden viewpoint and cobblestone lane. The result is a deeply personal encounter with one of the Atlantic’s most striking destinations.
Madeira rewards curious travellers willing to leave the main road. The north coast hides waterfall-laced valleys and the untouched greenery of Boaventura, while the south coast gathers sunshine in sheltered bays such as Ponta do Sol. Each microclimate shapes a distinct landscape, and driving between them in a single day is entirely achievable.
The island’s gastronomy is inseparable from its geography. Fresh limpets grilled over volcanic rock, trout from mountain hatcheries, and robust Madeiran wines grown on steep terraced slopes all tell the story of a place shaped by the sea and the land equally. Meals here are not incidental but central to understanding local life.
Cultural landmarks punctuate every stage of the route. From the 15th-century landing bay of Machico to the Guinness-record-holding restaurant in Porto Moniz, the itinerary weaves history and living tradition into each driving day without ever feeling like a checklist.
Tour Highlights
Boaventura: a nature sanctuary of unspoiled valleys and deep-green terraced hillsides, ideal for complete relaxation on the north coast.
Ponta do Sol: one of the sunniest corners of Madeira, offering a cobbled-stone beach, sea swimming, and snorkelling in calm Atlantic waters.
Balcoes viewpoint: a short one-hour hike through the Ribeiro Frio mountains rewards walkers with sweeping panoramas over the island’s rugged interior.
Veu da Noiva waterfall: a celebrated cascade on the north coast, wrapped in a local legend about unfulfilled love and eternal partnership.
Porto Moniz volcanic pools: natural seawater pools carved by lava flows, offering a unique and memorable swimming experience.
Cabo Girao: the second-highest sea cliff in the world, accessible via a short hike near Campanario, with vertiginous views over the Atlantic.
Madeiran gastronomy: from trout at Ribeiro Frio to limpet rice in Porto Moniz and traditional dishes in Funchal, each meal is a direct connection to local identity.
