Garajau Marine Reserve Single Dive, Madeira
Explore one of the Atlantic's most protected underwater sanctuaries off the coast of Funchal.
The Garajau Marine Reserve dive gives certified divers direct access to a richly populated underwater zone where Atlantic marine biodiversity is at its most concentrated. Depths average between 15 and 20 metres, making conditions accessible for divers at a range of experience levels. The reserve's protected status means marine life here is notably undisturbed and abundant.
Garajau is widely regarded as one of the finest dive sites in the North Atlantic, offering an extraordinary range of species within a single outing. Divers regularly encounter tunas, stingrays, large groupers, moray eels, barracuda, parrotfish, and trumpetfish sharing the same reef systems. The combination of clear Atlantic waters and protected habitat makes underwater photography particularly rewarding here.
The trip departs directly from the operator's shop conveniently located at Marina Funchal, allowing for an easy and stress-free start to the excursion. Tanks and weights are included, and additional gear rental is available at the shop for those who require it. Cruise ship passengers will find the marina location especially practical, given its proximity to docking facilities.
This single-dive format is well-suited to travellers with limited time in Madeira who want a focused, high-quality underwater experience. Those wishing to extend their diving can explore multi-day packages or two-tank dive options available through the operator's other bookings. Meeting time is 15 minutes before the scheduled departure.

How the Dive Unfolds
Participants meet at the dive shop located at Marina Funchal at least 15 minutes before departure. This is the time to complete any paperwork, collect rental gear, and receive a pre-dive briefing from the dive guide.
The group boards the dive boat for a short transfer to the Garajau Marine Reserve, located along Madeira's south coast. The journey provides views of the coastline and the dramatic cliffs that characterise this stretch of the island.
Once at the reserve, the dive guide conducts a site-specific briefing covering entry and exit procedures, points of interest, and any safety reminders. Divers are informed about the specific conditions and marine life expected at the selected dive site.
Divers enter the water and explore the reef systems of Garajau under the guidance of a certified dive instructor. Species such as stingrays, groupers, moray eels, and barracuda are commonly encountered throughout the dive.
After the dive, the group surfaces and boards the boat for the return transfer to Marina Funchal. The total experience, including travel and the dive itself, lasts approximately two and a half hours.
