2-Dive Trip at Garajau Marine Reserve, Madeira
Explore one of the Atlantic's most protected underwater sanctuaries on a guided double-dive excursion from Marina Funchal.
The Garajau Marine Reserve diving experience offers divers direct access to a nationally protected underwater habitat teeming with Atlantic marine life across two guided dives. Departing from Marina Funchal, this trip is rated easy and suits recreational divers of all experience levels. The reserve's rich biodiversity and clear waters have made it a benchmark destination for underwater exploration in the Macaronesian region.
Garajau Marine Reserve, established as one of Portugal's first marine protected areas, spans a dramatic stretch of Madeira's southern coastline. Its regulated environment has allowed fish populations to recover and thrive, resulting in encounters with species that are rarely seen in unprotected Atlantic waters. In 2022, the reserve hosted the European Championship of Underwater Photography, a testament to its exceptional visual quality beneath the surface.
The average depth across the reserve's dive sites ranges from 15 to 20 metres, making conditions manageable for certified divers without advanced deep-water training. The two dives are separated by a surface interval aboard the vessel, giving participants time to review conditions, discuss marine sightings, and prepare for the second descent. Tanks and weights are included in the trip price, with additional gear available for rental at the dive shop.
Cruise ship passengers visiting Funchal can join this excursion with ease, as the operator is based directly at Marina Funchal, only a short walk from the port. For those seeking extended diving, multi-day packages and afternoon departures are offered as separate bookings through the same operator.

How the Trip Unfolds
Participants check in at the dive shop located at Marina Funchal. Rental gear can be arranged at this stage, and the guide will conduct a briefing on the day's planned dive sites and conditions.
The group boards the dive vessel and travels to the Garajau Marine Reserve along Madeira's southern coast. The transfer provides views of the island's volcanic cliffs and the protected reserve boundary markers.
The first descent takes place at a selected site within the reserve, such as T-Reef or Cape Garajau, at an average depth of 15 to 20 metres. Divers explore the reef structure and observe the resident marine species under guide supervision.
Between dives, participants rest on the boat during a structured surface interval. This time allows for gas off-gassing, hydration, and discussion of marine life observed during the first dive.
The group descends for a second dive at an alternative site, which may include locations such as Garajau Drift, Blue Hole, or Sardine Plateau depending on conditions and group preference.
The vessel returns to Marina Funchal, with the trip concluding approximately three and a half hours after the morning check-in. Equipment is rinsed and returned at the shop.
