Portugal Inland Paths: Algarve and Alentejo Self-Drive Tour
Eight days of scenic roads, ancient cities, and coastal discoveries across southern Portugal.
This Portugal inland self-drive tour takes you through the layered landscapes and storied towns of the Algarve and Alentejo, two of the country's most rewarding regions to explore at your own pace.
Beginning in Faro and winding through mountain villages, dramatic coastal headlands, and sun-baked plains, the route is designed for travelers who prefer discovery over haste. Each overnight stop unlocks a different character of southern Portugal, from the thermal valleys of Monchique to the UNESCO-listed streets of Evora.
The pace is relaxed and the roads are manageable, making this an ideal journey for couples, solo travelers, or small groups seeking a meaningful connection with Portuguese culture, history, and nature.
Tour Highlights
Monchique's thermal resort at Caldas de Monchique offers walking trails, cycling routes, and the romantic Fonte dos Amores, the Love Fountain.
Cabo Sao Vicente presents some of Europe's most dramatic cliff scenery, steeped in the legends of the Age of Discovery and Prince Henry the Navigator.
Sagres Fortress stands as a testament to 15th-century maritime ambition, surrounded by sweeping Atlantic views and centuries of navigational history.
Grandola's Valley of Sobreiras delivers a serene rural retreat surrounded by cork oak woodland, with proximity to Comporta beach and the sculptural Cais Palafitico da Carrasqueira.
The Alqueva Reservoir region, the largest artificial lake in Europe, holds the world's first Starlight Tourism Destination certification for stargazing.
Evora, a UNESCO World Heritage city, gathers Roman temples, medieval cathedrals, and the striking Chapel of Bones within a walkable historic center.
Elvas hosts the largest bulwarked fortification in the world, a site of Portuguese independence battles and a key strategic base during the Napoleonic Wars.
