Trip to St. Simeon Monastery from Aswan
Step into one of Egypt's oldest Christian sanctuaries, perched across from Elephantine Island
This guided excursion to St. Simeon Monastery in Aswan offers a rare opportunity to explore one of Egypt's most ancient and well-preserved Coptic monastic complexes, dating back to the sixth century. The visit begins with a comfortable hotel pickup and covers the full extent of the monastery grounds. The experience is rated easy, making it suitable for a wide range of travelers.
Situated on the west bank of the Nile directly opposite the southern tip of Elephantine Island, St. Simeon Monastery stands as a remarkable example of early Christian architecture in Upper Egypt. Originally known as Anba Hatre Monastery, it was named after a local saint who converted to monastic life following his marriage. The site was later rededicated and became known under its current name.
The principal church within the monastery complex was constructed during the first half of the eleventh century, though some historians suggest construction may have begun as early as the tenth century. This church is considered the oldest of its kind still standing in Egypt. The fortified outer walls, vaulted corridors, and rock-cut cave churches together create a layered historical landscape spanning several centuries.
The monastery was abandoned in the thirteenth century, reportedly following an attack by Saladin's forces, and has remained uninhabited since. Its remote desert setting and state of preservation make it one of the more atmospheric heritage sites in the Aswan region. The trip takes approximately three hours in total, including transfers from and back to your hotel.
