Solheimajokull Ice Climbing & Glacier Hike
Walk on ancient ice, climb vertical walls, and witness one of Iceland's most dramatic natural landscapes.
This Solheimajokull glacier hike and ice climbing tour is a four-hour deep dive into one of Iceland's most compelling natural environments, combining guided glacier walking with hands-on vertical ice climbing for adventurers of all experience levels.
You will meet your guide at the Sólheimajökull parking lot and set off on a 30-minute walk across open terrain to reach the glacier's edge. The approach itself sets the tone, offering a sense of scale and context as the ice comes gradually into view.
Sólheimajökull is an outlet glacier of Mýrdalsjökull, one of the largest glaciers in Europe, and it sits atop the Katla volcano. The glacier was featured prominently in the 2012 documentary Chasing Ice, which examined the accelerating retreat of glaciers worldwide due to climate change.
Once on the ice, your guide will orient you to the glacier's features, including millennia-old blue ice, deep moulins, and the eerie stillness that defines these frozen landscapes. You will then learn to use crampons and ice axes before ascending a vertical crevasse wall under the supervision of your experienced guide.
Tour Highlights
Walk on the ancient surface of Sólheimajökull and observe millennia-old blue ice formed under immense glacial pressure.
Climb a vertical crevasse wall using ice axes and crampons with full guidance and safety equipment provided.
Discover the glacier's position atop Katla, one of Iceland's most active and powerful volcanoes.
Peer into a glacier moulin, a vertical shaft that descends all the way to the glacier's base.
On clear days, view Eyjafjallajökull to the east, the volcano whose 2010 eruption halted European air travel.
Experience the same glacier documented in the award-winning climate change film Chasing Ice.
All safety equipment and a full briefing are provided before departure, making this accessible to first-time glacier visitors.
Tour Itinerary
