Kasbah Ait Benhaddou and Telouet Full-Day Private Tour
Two UNESCO-listed and historically significant kasbahs in a single private journey through the High Atlas Mountains
This private day trip from Marrakech to Kasbah Ait Benhaddou and Telouet takes you deep into southern Morocco's most celebrated architectural heritage, crossing the dramatic High Atlas to visit two kasbahs that have shaped the region's history and identity. The route is graded easy, making it accessible to a wide range of travellers seeking culture and landscape without strenuous activity.
Ksar Ait Benhaddou stands on the banks of the Ounila River, its ochre-coloured earthen towers rising against the arid hillside in a composition that earned it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The site has also served as a backdrop for numerous international film and television productions, lending it a layered cultural resonance that goes beyond its architectural merit.
Kasbah Telouet, sometimes referred to as the Glaoui Palace, occupies a quieter position in the High Atlas and receives far fewer visitors than Ait Benhaddou, giving it an atmosphere of authentic discovery. Its interior rooms preserve elaborate stucco carvings, zellige tilework, and cedar-painted ceilings commissioned during the early twentieth century by Thami El Glaoui, once one of the most powerful figures in pre-independence Morocco.
Travelling between the two sites on this private tour allows for a flexible pace and direct engagement with your guide, who can contextualise both the Berber heritage of the ksar and the complex political history of the Glaoua clan without the interruptions common on shared group tours.

Itinerary
Your private vehicle departs from Marrakech in the morning, heading south through the city outskirts and onto the road that climbs into the High Atlas Mountains. The Tizi n'Tichka pass, at over 2,260 metres, offers sweeping views across the range and marks the transition from the Atlantic-influenced north to the arid south.
Before reaching Ouarzazate, your route turns off toward the village of Telouet in the High Atlas. Kasbah Telouet, built from the eighteenth century onward and expanded significantly by Thami El Glaoui in the first half of the twentieth century, reveals elaborately decorated rooms whose ceilings and walls were crafted by an estimated 300 workers over several years.
Continuing south, the tour arrives at the ksar of Ait Benhaddou, situated on the Ounila River in the province of Ouarzazate. Your guide leads you through the labyrinthine lanes of this UNESCO-listed settlement, pointing out the communal granary (agadir) at the summit and explaining the construction techniques that have kept these earthen structures standing for centuries.
Time is allocated for independent exploration within the ksar, allowing you to examine the architectural details at your own pace, interact with the small number of families who still reside within the walls, and take in views over the surrounding valley and palmery.
After the visits, your private vehicle makes the return journey northward over the High Atlas, arriving back in Marrakech in the early evening. The return route retraces the mountain pass, offering a second opportunity to appreciate the scale of the Atlas landscape in the afternoon light.
