How the Day Unfolds
The group meets for pickup in Reykjavik before a roughly 50-minute drive to the starting point near the Thingvellir National Park boundary. The guide provides a route briefing and introduces the orienteering tools for the day.
The trek begins across lava fields and through geothermal valleys, where steam vents and mineral-coloured soils mark the volcanic activity beneath the surface. The guide begins orienteering instruction on this more gradual section of the route.
The route steepens as the group climbs toward the high point of Hengill volcano, gaining most of the 1,010 m of elevation on this section. Ridge views open progressively, revealing the surrounding highlands and park landscapes below.
At the summit, the group pauses to take in sweeping views across Thingvellir, Lake Thingvallavatn, and the lava plains extending toward Reykjavik. The guide covers historical and geological context relevant to what can be seen from this vantage point.
The descent leads to the secluded natural hot spring, where participants change into swimsuits and spend time relaxing in the geothermal waters. This is an unbuilt, off-grid location accessed solely by foot.
After the hot spring stop, the group returns to the vehicle for the drive back to Reykjavik, with drop-off at the original meeting point. Total return to the city is typically by the evening.
