Private Day Trek to Akrafjall: The Troll's Mountain
A guided mountain journey through myth, geology, and sweeping panoramas above Faxaflói Bay.
The Akrafjall day trek takes you to one of West Iceland's most storied peaks, combining a 15 km hike with orienteering skills, geological storytelling, and uninterrupted views from Reykjanes to Snæfellsjökull Glacier. This private tour departs from Reykjavik and reaches the summit of Geirmundartindur at 643 metres above sea level.
Akrafjall rises above Akranes on the Akranes Peninsula, roughly 50 minutes from Reykjavik. The mountain was sculpted by Ice Age glaciers and at one point stood almost entirely surrounded by water, leaving behind a terrain of sharp ridgelines, open valleys, and layered basalt formations that reward those willing to climb.
The route follows trails that see far fewer visitors than Iceland's more celebrated highlands, offering a genuine sense of solitude. Your guide leads the group through less-travelled sections of the mountain, pausing to explain the geology, local wildlife, and the region's place in Icelandic folklore, including the legend of Joka, the troll said to have carried the mountain from southern Iceland before turning to stone at its summit.
Throughout the ascent, participants practise orienteering using a compass, altimeter, and natural landmarks under expert instruction. This practical element turns the hike into a skill-building experience and gives confidence to those who want to explore Iceland's backcountry on future trips.
