Northern Lights Hike to Reykjadalur Hot River
A guided night hike through Steam Valley to a naturally heated river beneath Iceland's open sky.
This Northern Lights hike to Reykjadalur takes you on a 6 km trail from the town of Hveragerði into a geothermal valley where a warm river flows through the hills, offering a rare chance to soak under a dark, star-filled sky. The experience combines moderate physical activity with one of Iceland's most rewarding natural rewards. Small groups of up to 15 participants keep the atmosphere intimate and the pace manageable for most fitness levels.
Reykjadalur, meaning Steam Valley in Icelandic, earns its name honestly. The trail passes bubbling hot springs, steaming vents, and sulfurous soil formations that glow faintly in the beam of your headlamp as night settles over the valley. The landscape feels remote even though the drive from Reykjavik takes only about 40 minutes.
At the river, geothermally heated water maintains a comfortable temperature year-round, making it possible to bathe even in winter conditions. On clear nights during aurora season, the absence of light pollution turns the sky into a vivid display of color above the rising steam. Even without an aurora, the silence and the stars alone make the destination worthwhile.
The hike covers 6 kilometers with 330 meters of elevation gain across mostly dirt and gravel trail. A headlamp is provided, and the guided pace is designed to be accessible for participants aged 8 and above with basic walking fitness.

What to Expect
Your guide meets you at the designated pickup point in Reykjavik and drives approximately 40 minutes south to the town of Hveragerði, the starting point of the hike. You receive your headlamp and any final briefing before setting off.
The trail begins at the edge of town and climbs gradually into Reykjadalur over roughly one hour. Your guide points out geothermal features along the path, including steaming vents and hot spring pools that line the route.
The trail ends at the naturally heated river, where changing areas allow you to prepare for a soak. Water temperature varies along the river, letting you find a comfortable spot between warmer and cooler sections.
While relaxing in the river, the guide monitors sky conditions and alerts the group to any aurora activity. Clear nights offer excellent views of the Milky Way and constellations above the steam-filled valley.
After time at the river, the group hikes back down the trail to Hveragerði using headlamps. The return drive to Reykjavik brings the total outing to approximately 4 hours plus travel time.
