Golden Circle & Ice Cave Tour in Monster Truck from Reykjavik
Drive the Golden Circle, then board a glacier truck to explore an ancient ice cave hidden deep within Langjokull.
This full-day journey combines Iceland's most celebrated scenic route with a raw, off-road glacier experience aboard a purpose-built monster truck. The Golden Circle Ice Cave Tour takes you from the geological drama of Thingvellir National Park to the crystalline depths of the Neptune Ice Cave on Langjokull Glacier. Few day trips in Iceland cover this much ground with this level of immersion.
The morning unfolds across three of Iceland's most storied landmarks. Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates visibly diverge and where Iceland's parliament, the Althing, was founded in 930 AD. From there, the route continues to the Geysir geothermal area, where the hot spring Strokkur erupts reliably every four to eight minutes, sending water surging up to 25 meters into the air.
After witnessing the thundering double cascade of Gullfoss waterfall, the tour shifts into a different register entirely. A specially engineered Red Glacier Truck — one of the largest of its kind — carries you across the surface of Langjokull, Iceland's second-largest glacier. The scale and stillness of the ice field stand in sharp contrast to the busy sights of the morning.
The highlight of the glacier segment is the Neptune Ice Cave, named for the deep oceanic blue of its compressed glacial ice. Layers of crystal-clear ice, streaked with black volcanic ash deposited over centuries, line the cave walls in patterns that read like a geological archive. Guides provide context on glacial science, local folklore, and the volcanic history embedded in every dark streak across the ice.
Tour Highlights
Walk the rift valley at Thingvellir, where two tectonic plates pull apart and Iceland's parliamentary history began in 930 AD.
Watch Strokkur geyser erupt every four to eight minutes, shooting a column of boiling water up to 25 meters high.
Stand at the edge of Gullfoss, a two-tiered waterfall that plunges into a 35-meter canyon with mist and, on clear days, rainbows.
Board the Sleipnir Monster Truck, one of Iceland's largest glacier vehicles, for a powerful ascent onto Langjokull Glacier.
Enter the Neptune Ice Cave, where compressed blue ice and volcanic ash layers create a visually striking underground environment.
Photograph panoramic glacier views from the top of Langjokull, with unobstructed sightlines across Iceland's highland interior.
Receive expert commentary from guides on glacial science, Icelandic folklore, and the volcanic geology visible throughout the route.
Itinerary
Pick-up begins at various central Reykjavik locations aboard a Superjeep or modified small bus. The transfer to the first stop takes you through Iceland's varied southwestern landscape.
Explore the UNESCO-listed site where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet and where the Althing — Iceland's first parliament — convened in 930 AD. The rift valley and lava field scenery are unlike anywhere else on the route.
Visit the Haukadalur geothermal field, home to Strokkur geyser and its reliable eruptions, as well as colorful sulfur deposits and iron-red rock formations. There is an opportunity to purchase lunch on-site before continuing.
Transfer to the Sleipnir Red Glacier Truck at the base of Langjokull and ascend onto the glacier's surface. Guides share stories of local folklore and glacial science during the ride up.
Step inside the Neptune Ice Cave, located deep within Langjokull Glacier, and observe walls of compressed blue ice layered with black volcanic ash. The cave offers a rare, tangible record of Iceland's eruptive past.
Conclude the outdoor portion of the day at Gullfoss, walking the viewing paths alongside the two-tiered cascade before boarding the return vehicle to Reykjavik. The drive back follows a scenic route through the Icelandic countryside.
