The tour begins at this extraordinary site where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet, creating a rift valley of rare visual drama. The park holds the ruins of Althingi, the world's oldest parliament, founded in 930 AD, and its lake Thingvallavatn is Iceland's largest natural lake. Since 2004, the site has held UNESCO World Heritage status.
The geothermal area at Geysir contains hot springs, boiling mud pools, and the highly active Strokkur geyser, which erupts every five to ten minutes with reliable force. The larger Geysir itself erupts less frequently but can project water up to 70 meters. The surrounding steam and sulfurous landscape offers a vivid demonstration of Iceland's volcanic interior.
Fed by meltwater from Langjokull glacier, Gullfoss descends 32 meters into a rugged canyon in two dramatic stages. On clear days, rainbows form above the gorge, lending the site its name, the Golden Waterfall. A path leads close to the falls, where the sound and spray are fully immersive.
This collapsed volcanic caldera presents one of Iceland's most visually distinctive landscapes, with rust-colored crater walls descending to a turquoise lake below. The crater is believed to be around 3,000 years old and is one of the few volcanic features in the area that visitors can walk around entirely. The contrast of colors makes it a particularly memorable stop.
On the return journey, the route passes through Hvalfjordur, one of the longest fjords in southern Iceland, named for the whales historically observed in its waters. The fjord is bordered by waterfalls, volcanic rock formations, and open moorland. A major whale research station operated here in the late twentieth century.
The day concludes with a bathing session in this natural geothermal pool, heated naturally to between 38 and 40 degrees Celsius. Small geysers are visible from the water throughout the year, and during winter months, the Northern Lights occasionally appear overhead. It is a fitting and restorative end to a full day of exploration.
