The route begins at Miðdalsheiði, where you cross the river Hólmsá at a ford known as Gudduós before gradually ascending onto Mosfellsheiði. As the trail continues toward the Hengill area, the landscape shifts dramatically. Geothermal steam rises from vents in the earth, and the vast infrastructure of the Hellisheiði Power Station — the largest geothermal facility in Iceland and the eighth largest in the world — comes into view. The station supplies 303 MW of electricity and 200 MWth of hot water to Reykjavík's district heating network.
Hengill itself rises to 803 metres and stands at the centre of a volcanic system that stretches toward the coast. It lies south of Þingvellir National Park and Lake Þingvallavatn, placing this adventure route within one of Iceland's most historically and geologically significant corridors. Itinerary
The tour begins at the meeting point near the Hengill area. Shortly after setting off, you cross the river Hólmsá at the Gudduós ford on Miðdalsheiði, an immediate introduction to Iceland's raw terrain.
The trail climbs gradually onto the Mosfellsheiði plateau, which reaches 410 metres at its highest point. The open heath stretches between Mount Esja to the north and the Hengill volcano to the east, covered in moss and scattered lava.
Descending toward the Hengill volcanic zone, you pass the Hellisheiði Geothermal Power Station. Located 11 km from the Nesjavellir facility, it is the largest geothermal plant in Iceland and a striking feature of the Icelandic energy landscape.
The route brings you into the heart of the Hengill region, where the 803-metre volcano anchors a geothermal system extending toward the coast. Steam vents and lava formations are visible throughout this section of the trail.
