The tour begins at Hrauneyjar Highland Center, where guides lead the group east along Sigolduvegur Gamli. The route skirts the edge of Solvahraun, a broad lava field situated between Sauoafell and Valafell.
Continuing past the 1970-era Skjolkvíarhraun lava field, the mighty Hekla volcano comes into view to the south. The route then follows Svalaskaró through Helliskvísl and the dramatic Pokahryggir ridges before descending into the steaming geothermal valley of Reykjadalir.
The first official stop is Hrafntinnusker, a remote rhyolite mountain known for its hot springs and, in certain years, glacier caves. This location also serves as a notable waypoint on the Laugavegur hiking trail, though access may vary based on seasonal snowfall.
Descending toward Dalamot and crossing the Hrafntinnuhraun lava field, the group pauses at the hidden Rudolf waterfall. The route continues past Laufafell toward Rangarbotnar and then north toward Mosfell, climbing Breiðaskaró with Innri Vatnafjoll to the left.
A lunch break is taken amid the wilderness near Nyjahraun lava fields, west of Krakatindur. The surrounding landscape offers an unobstructed view of the highland interior at its most remote.
