Itinerary
The tour begins at the Skarfabakki cruise terminal in Reykjavík. Additional pick-up points are available in Hveragerði and Selfoss for guests travelling from those areas.
The bus passes through Hveragerði, a town underlain by intense geothermal activity where hot springs heat local greenhouses. A brief stop at the shopping centre allows guests to view an earthquake fissure. Selfoss, the largest inland town in Iceland and the main service hub of the South, follows shortly after.
Seljalandsfoss can be circled on a narrow path behind the falling water, offering an unusual perspective on the 60-metre drop. At Skógafoss, visitors can approach the base of the falls directly, though waterproof clothing is advisable given the heavy spray.
The accessible outlet glacier of Mýrdalsjökull is visibly smaller than it was a decade ago, having retreated by more than a kilometre in recent years. Its surface is partly blackened by ash deposited during historic volcanic eruptions.
Rising up to 115 metres above sea level, Dyrhólaey is the southernmost point of the Icelandic mainland. The distinctive arch in the basalt rock gave the former island its name, and in summer months puffins and other seabirds nest along the cliffs.
The tour concludes at this famous beach, where geometrically stacked basalt columns, a sea cave and the Reynisdrangar sea stacks — said in legend to be the remains of a petrified troll ship — create a memorable final stop. Guests are advised to stay well back from the waterline due to unpredictable surge waves.
