Picos de Europa and Potes Guided Tour from Santander
A journey through gorges, monasteries, and mountain villages in the heart of Cantabria
This full-day small-group tour invites you to discover Picos de Europa, one of Spain's most dramatic natural landscapes, alongside the sacred Monastery of Santo Toribio and the medieval town of Potes. Itinerary
The tour departs from Santander and heads south toward the Liébana region. After approximately two hours, the route enters the Hermida Gorge, a 21-kilometre natural passage flanked by towering cliff faces, considered the longest gorge in Spain.
The first stop is the Monastery of Santo Toribio, one of Christianity's four designated holy sites. The monastery houses the Lignum Crucis, the largest known surviving fragment of the Cross of Christ, drawing pilgrims and visitors from across the world to this peaceful mountain setting.
A scenic 30-minute drive through the Liébana valley leads to Fuente Dé, where approximately 80 minutes of free time allows you to take the optional cable car to the upper station at 1,823 metres. An optional one-hour horseback riding excursion is also available seasonally for those who prefer to explore the area on the ground.
The group arrives in Potes, the capital of Liébana, in the early afternoon. After a lunch break (not included), the guide leads a relaxed walking tour through the town's cobblestone streets, across its historic bridges, and along the riverside pathways, sharing the history of landmarks including the Torre del Infantado.
Following the guided walk, the group boards the vehicle for the return drive to Santander. The journey retraces the scenic route through the Liébana valley, offering a final view of the mountains before the tour concludes.
