Sequoia Forest and San Vicente de la Barquera Tour from Santander
Ancient giants, a medieval coastline, and the soul of Cantabria in a single journey
This Sequoia Forest and San Vicente de la Barquera tour takes you through two of Cantabria's most remarkable destinations, combining natural wonder with centuries of coastal history. Departing from Santander, you will stand beneath trees reaching 40 metres and then walk the cobbled streets of a town that has guarded the Cantabrian Sea since the Middle Ages.
The Cabezón de la Sal Sequoia Forest, declared a Natural Monument in 2003, covers 2.5 hectares and ranks among the largest sequoia forests in Spain. Walking its trail network offers a genuine sense of scale and stillness that is difficult to find elsewhere in northern Spain.
San Vicente de la Barquera adds a different dimension to the day. Its estuary, beaches, and mountain backdrop form one of the most photographed panoramas on the entire Cantabrian coast. The historic old town, recognised as Cultural Heritage of Cantabria, holds a Gothic church, a medieval castle, and the remains of ancient defensive walls.

Itinerary
The tour departs from Santander and heads west through the Cantabrian countryside. The drive takes approximately 30 minutes, with scenic views of the region's green hills along the way.
Upon arrival, you will follow a short walking route through the 2.5-hectare forest, home to some of the tallest sequoias in Spain. Sturdy footwear is recommended, and the trail requires no significant elevation change.
A short 15-minute drive connects the forest to the coast. The route offers the first glimpses of the Cantabrian Sea and the mountains beyond.
A guide leads you through the old town, visiting the Gothic Church of Santa María de los Ángeles and the medieval Castillo del Rey. The historic centre sits on a hill, so the route involves some inclines.
After the guided section, you will have free time to explore the town, visit a local cafe, or browse the shops at your own pace.
The return drive takes approximately 50 minutes, arriving back in Santander to conclude the tour.
