Full-Day Tour of Cantabria's Western Coastal Towns from Santander
From medieval fishing villages to prehistoric cave art — one unforgettable day along the Cantabrian coast.
This western Cantabria coastal tour takes you through four of the region's most historically significant destinations in a single, well-paced day. Starting from Santander, the route connects landscapes, architecture, and archaeology in a coherent journey that requires no prior planning on your part.
The day moves from the Atlantic estuaries of San Vicente de la Barquera through the modernist streets of Comillas, then into the cobblestone medieval quarter of Santillana del Mar, finishing with a guided visit to the Altamira neocave. Each stop offers a distinct layer of Cantabrian identity, from Romanesque churches to Gaudí-era architecture.
The itinerary is designed for travelers who want depth without exhaustion. Difficulty is rated easy, with comfortable minibus transfers between stops and two hours of free time in Santillana del Mar for lunch or independent exploration.
All guided sections are led by a knowledgeable local guide, and optional visits are available at certain sites for those who wish to go further at their own pace and cost.
Tour Highlights
Explore the historic complex of San Vicente de la Barquera, including its 13th–16th century Gothic church and its 12th-century castle, one of the best preserved in the region.
Travel through Oyambre Natural Park by minibus, taking in its expansive beaches, coastal dunes, and tidal estuaries.
Discover Comillas, Cantabria's only modernist town, featuring the neo-Gothic Sobrellano Palace, its Pantheon Chapel, and the iconic Capricho de Gaudí building.
Walk the cobbled lanes of Santillana del Mar, a medieval town that has preserved its palaces, towers, and stone mansions in remarkable condition.
Visit the Romanesque Collegiate Church of Santa Juliana, a 12th-century landmark and one of the most important religious monuments in Cantabria.
Enter the Altamira neocave, an exact replica of the UNESCO World Heritage cave, and discover the extraordinary Paleolithic art that shaped our understanding of prehistoric humanity.
Itinerary
After hotel pickup in Santander, the group travels approximately 50 minutes to this historic fishing village. A guided walk covers the Gothic church, the 12th-century castle, and the town's role as a key medieval settlement on the Cantabrian coast.
The minibus route from San Vicente to Comillas passes through Oyambre Natural Park, offering views of the park's protected beaches, dune systems, and estuaries without requiring any strenuous activity.
A guided walk introduces the town's exceptional modernist heritage: the neo-Gothic Sobrellano Palace designed by Joan Martorell, the Pantheon Chapel where the Marquis of Comillas family is buried, and the Capricho de Gaudí building, one of the few works by Antoni Gaudí outside Catalonia. The Capricho visit is optional and carries an additional charge payable in cash to the guide.
A 20-minute transfer leads to this remarkably intact medieval town. The guided section covers its palaces, towers, and the exterior of the 12th-century Collegiate Church of Santa Juliana. Two hours of free time follow for lunch and independent exploration of the town's shops and plazas.
The final stop is the Altamira Museum, where a guided tour leads the group through the neocave — a full-scale, high-fidelity replica of the original cave's Paleolithic paintings. The original cave, discovered in the 19th century, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985.
The group boards the minibus for the approximately 30-minute return journey to Santander, completing the full-day circuit of Cantabria's western coast.
