Itinerary
The day begins with pickup from your Ponta Delgada hotel, after which you head out into the countryside around Furnas. Once in the crater area, you transfer into an off-road vehicle to reach sights along the region's country lanes, including the Furnas Lake view, Lombo do milho, the Caldeiras stews area by Furnas Lake, Furnas Village with its fumaroles, and the Gorreana tea plantation. Your guide explains the volcanic activity behind the geysers, mud pools and hot springs as you move between stops. You pass white Azorean houses and have time to photograph the emerald-green Lagoa das Furnas and surrounding viewpoints before being dropped back at your hotel.
Before you go
This tour includes hotel pickup and drop-off in Ponta Delgada, São Miguel Island, along with a driver/guide, run in a small-group format. Entrance fees for thermal pools and natural parks are not included, nor are optional drinks and snacks. Comfortable shoes are recommended, and bringing a swimsuit and towel is advised so you can enjoy the hot springs if you choose to. Collapsible wheelchairs with removable wheels can be accommodated provided the passenger is accompanied by someone who can assist with boarding and disembarking. Cancellations made at least 24 hours in advance receive a full refund or credit, as do cancellations by the operator due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances; no-shows are charged in full.
