Glacier Hike and Ice Cave Adventure on Vatnajokull

Step inside one of Iceland's living glaciers and explore crystal crevasses found nowhere else on Earth.

This glacier hike and ice cave tour takes you deep into Vatnajokull National Park for an encounter with ancient ice, luminous blue caves, and the raw geological forces that shape Iceland's most dramatic landscape. Guided by experienced local experts, you will explore formations that change with every season and leave no two visits alike.

Your journey begins at the Glacier Lagoon parking lot, where you board a 4x4 vehicle for a drive across a historic glacial plain toward Breidamerkurjokull Glacier. Once at the glacier parking lot, you receive full gear including crampons, an ice axe, a harness, and a helmet with a headlamp before setting out on foot.

The route leads through a raw and otherworldly tundra before arriving at the Crystal Ice Cave, a naturally formed cavern with river water flowing beneath it. The cave reshapes itself each year, meaning every visitor encounters a structure that has never existed in quite that form before.

After the cave, the tour continues onto the glacier itself, where your guide leads you across ice fields to the crystal crevasses. These deep glacial canyons intensify in color the further you descend, producing a visual experience that is genuinely difficult to describe until you are standing inside it.

Tour Highlights

Enter a naturally formed crystal ice cave inside Vatnajokull, one of Europe's largest glaciers, and witness its luminous blue chambers up close.

A dedicated on-tour photographer captures you inside the ice cave and across the glacier, with an edited photo package delivered within 14 days.

Travel to the glacier aboard a purpose-built 4x4 super jeep, accessing remote terrain that standard vehicles cannot reach.

Explore the crystal crevasses on Breidamerkurjokull Glacier, where deep glacial canyons reveal an intensifying spectrum of blue ice the further you descend.

All safety equipment is provided on-site, including crampons, an ice axe, harness, and a helmet fitted with a headlamp for cave exploration.

Guides with extensive knowledge of the glacier's geology narrate the history of the surrounding landscape throughout the journey.

An optional private pickup from Reykjavik transforms the experience into a full-day private tour, covering the entire journey from the capital and back.

Itinerary

1
Meet at Glacier Lagoon and Drive to the Glacier

Meet your guide at the Glacier Lagoon parking lot in Vatnajokull National Park. You board a 4x4 vehicle and travel approximately 20 to 30 minutes along an F-Road to the glacier parking lot, with your guide narrating the history of the glacial plain along the way.

2
Gear Up and Hike to the Ice Cave

At the glacier parking lot, your guide distributes crampons, an ice axe, a harness, and a helmet with a headlamp. The group then takes a 30-minute hike across flat, slightly rocky ground to reach the edge of the glacier and the entrance of the Crystal Ice Cave.

3
Explore the Crystal Ice Cave

You enter the cavern and move through multiple chambers as your guide photographs you in the most striking locations inside the cave. The guide also explains the geological processes behind the cave's formation, color, and annual transformation.

4
Hike Across Breidamerkurjokull Glacier

Exiting the cave, you step onto the glacier and hike toward the crystal crevasses, passing glacial formations known as moulins along the way. The guide leads the group at a comfortable pace across the ice while pointing out distinct features of the glacial surface.

5
Descend into the Crystal Crevasses

The group arrives at the top of a slope descending into a deep ice canyon where the walls shift progressively from white to vivid crystal blue. Approximately one hour is spent exploring this section, which is widely considered the most visually striking part of the tour.

6
Return to Glacier Lagoon

The group hikes back to the glacier parking lot and drives 30 minutes to the Glacier Lagoon, concluding the 5-hour tour. Your edited photo package will be delivered within approximately 14 days following the tour.
