From Porto: Small Group Douro Valley Wine Tour
A full-day journey through terraced vineyards, riverside villages, and legendary wineries along one of Europe's most scenic river valleys.
The Douro Valley wine tour takes you from Porto deep into a UNESCO-recognized landscape, where vine-covered terraces cascade down to the river and centuries-old quintas open their doors for guided tastings and cellar visits.
Departing Porto, the route winds through green granite highlands before dropping into the dramatic valley carved by the Douro River. Along the way, stops in traditional towns give you a genuine sense of northern Portuguese life beyond the tourist trail.
Two premium wineries anchor the day, offering insight into the region's distinct winemaking methods and the opportunity to taste wines that reflect the character of the schist soil and Atlantic-influenced microclimate. A panoramic river cruise rounds out the experience, placing the terraced landscape in full view from the water.
The itinerary follows the celebrated national road 222, widely regarded as one of the most scenic drives in Europe, running directly alongside the Douro River through the heart of the designated wine region.

Itinerary
The tour departs Porto heading east along the motorway toward Vila Real. The landscape transitions from the coastal plains through a corridor of green vegetation and exposed granite rock formations.
The first stop is Amarante, a picturesque town built along both banks of the Tamega River. The historic church overlooking the arched bridge defines the town's skyline, and free time allows for a short walk and coffee with local pastries.
The route continues through Portugal's longest tunnel, cutting beneath the Serra do Marão and marking the natural threshold into the Douro wine country. The terraced vineyards come into full view as the valley opens up ahead.
After lunch, the group follows national road 222 to the riverside village of Pinhão for a panoramic cruise on the Douro River. The cruise provides an unobstructed view of the valley's terraced hillsides from the water.
Two visits to premium quintas along the Douro are included, each featuring a guided tour of the production facilities and a structured tasting session. The guides explain how the valley's unique schist soils and climate shape the final wines.
Following the final winery visit, the group travels back toward Porto, arriving by evening. The return journey retraces part of the scenic route through the mountains.
