Itinerary
The tour begins in Fuseta, a traditional fishing village of around 1,900 residents characterised by flat-roofed cubic houses and balloon-shaped chimneys. After boarding, the skipper introduces the route and the natural features of Ria Formosa before entering the protected lagoon area.
An early stop at Armona Bay provides an introduction to the sheltered inner lagoon environment. The bay offers calm waters and views across to the barrier island system that defines the park's coastline.
Culatra Island is a 7-km-long community of approximately 1,000 inhabitants whose origins trace back to sardine fishing in the 1880s. Nearby Hangares grew around a former Portuguese Naval Aviation seaplane base — today only the hangar foundations and the Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary remain.
The village of Farol developed around the lighthouse built in 1851, and two hours ashore allow time to walk the sandy streets, observe the modest fishermen's houses, and find lunch independently at one of the local options.
Also known as Barreta Island, Deserta stretches 8 km with a width of between 70 and 700 metres. The island has very low human occupation; a wooden walkway runs along the lagoon side and leads to the open Atlantic beach.
The boat returns to the departure point in Fuseta, completing the full circuit of the park's most significant islands and lagoon areas.
