At the eastern limit of the Algarve, Vila Real de Santo António was built in the eighteenth century under the Marquis of Pombal using a grid plan identical to Lisbon's reconstructed Baixa district. The central Praça Marquês de Pombal is flanked by symmetrical buildings and an obelisk, while the riverfront promenade looks directly across the Guadiana to the Spanish town of Ayamonte.
