Boat Tour to Culatra Island from Olhao and Faro
A guided 3-hour voyage through the lagoon islands of Ria Formosa, departing from the fishing village of Fuzeta.
This boat tour to Culatra Island takes you through one of Portugal's most protected coastal ecosystems, navigating the calm waterways of Ria Formosa Natural Park between Armona and Culatra islands.
Departing from Fuzeta, a historic fishing village on the eastern Algarve, the tour follows a route through barrier islands shaped by centuries of sediment, wind, and Atlantic tides. Your skipper serves as both navigator and guide, sharing knowledge about the ecology and human history of the lagoon throughout the journey.
Two stops are included: a 30-minute visit to a beach on Armona Island and a 30-minute exploration of Culatra Island, where a community of around 1,000 residents has maintained a fishing way of life since the late 19th century. Binoculars and an illustrated brochure are provided on board.
The itinerary covers the full arc of the Ria Formosa system, from the narrow inlet channels near Fuzeta to the open Atlantic-facing dune lines of the barrier islands. The natural park status of the area means wildlife sightings, including shore birds and marine species, are a regular feature of the route.

Itinerary
The tour begins in Fuzeta, a fishing village of around 1,900 residents whose name derives from the Portuguese word for river mouth. The village retains its traditional Algarve architecture, including cubic houses, flat roofs, and balloon-shaped chimneys.
The boat enters the protected area of Ria Formosa, a coastal lagoon system recognized for its ecological significance. The skipper provides information about the park's habitats, including saltmarshes, tidal flats, and dune systems.
Armona Island stretches approximately 9 km in length, with a frontal dune system reaching 8 to 9 meters in height. A 30-minute stop at Armona Bay gives passengers time to walk the beach and take in the Atlantic-facing shoreline.
Culatra Island's settlement dates to around 1880, when fishing communities from nearby villages established a base here for sardine fishing. Today the island supports roughly 1,000 inhabitants living in a community accessible only by boat.
The boat returns through the lagoon channels to the departure point in Fuzeta, completing the 3-hour circuit of the Ria Formosa system.
