Morocco Anti-Atlas & Sahara 8 Days Tour from Marrakech
From the High Atlas to the Atlantic — an eight-day journey through kasbahs, dunes, and coastal villages.
This Morocco Anti-Atlas and Sahara Desert tour takes you through some of the most varied landscapes in North Africa, connecting ancient caravan routes, towering sand dunes, and breezy Atlantic coastlines in a single cohesive journey. The route is rated easy, making it accessible to a broad range of travellers.
Departing from Marrakech, the itinerary moves through the High Atlas Mountains before descending into the dramatic scenery of the Draa Valley, where thousands of date palms line a ribbon of river cutting through arid rock. The iconic Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and backdrop to globally recognised film and television productions, anchors the first leg of the journey.
The central highlight is a night spent under the stars in a traditional Berber camp at Erg Chegaga, one of Morocco's most remote and least-visited dune fields. The return leg curves westward through Taroudant and Agadir before reaching the wind-scoured medina and beaches of Essaouira, offering a coastal counterpoint to the desert experience before the final return to Marrakech.
Tour Highlights
Walk through the UNESCO-listed Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified clay village that has served as a film set for decades.
Ride a 4x4 Jeep across the remote Erg Chegaga dunes, among the largest and least-touristed sand seas in Morocco.
Spend a night in a traditional Berber camp with a Moroccan dinner and live Gnawa music under a desert sky.
Climb the dunes at dawn to watch the sunrise spread across the Sahara, a perspective that no photograph fully captures.
Drive through the Draa Valley, a fertile corridor of palm groves and Berber villages set against a backdrop of stark desert plateaux.
Explore Essaouira's Atlantic seafront, where fresh seafood, water sports, and a well-preserved medina converge on Morocco's windswept coast.
Visit an argan oil women's cooperative on the return to Marrakech, gaining insight into a centuries-old Moroccan industry.
Itinerary Overview
A professional driver meets you at Marrakech Airport with a name sign and transfers you directly to your hotel or riad. The rest of the day is yours to settle in and begin exploring the city at your own pace.
After breakfast, the route crosses the High Atlas with stops at Berber villages and mountain viewpoints before reaching the famous fortified ksar of Ait Ben Haddou. The day concludes in Ouarzazate, often called the door of the desert.
The drive follows the Draa Valley south through Zagora, passing ancient ksour, palmeries, and the first Tiguida dunes near Tinfou. At Mhamid El Ghizlane, a 4x4 Jeep takes you deep into the Erg Chegaga dunes for a Berber camp overnight.
Rise before dawn to climb the dunes and watch the Sahara sunrise, then return to camp for a Berber breakfast. The journey continues westward through the Anti-Atlas to Taroudant, with an optional guided walk through its walled medina on arrival.
A short drive connects Taroudant to Agadir, where the Ouflla ruins and the Souk Al Hadd market offer cultural interest before free time on the Atlantic beach. The following morning the coastal road leads north to Essaouira, passing Berber villages and banana plantations.
Breakfast in Essaouira is followed by a morning departure toward Marrakech, with an optional stop at an argan forest and a women's cooperative along the way. Back in Marrakech, time permits visits to the Koutoubia Mosque, Bahia Palace, Jemaa el-Fnaa square, and Majorelle Gardens before the airport transfer on the final day.
