Zanzibar Day Trip to Prison Island, Stone Town & Nakupenda Beach
History, turquoise waters, and a pristine sandbank — all in one remarkable day.
This Zanzibar day trip combines the layered history of Stone Town, the wildlife of Prison Island, and the unspoiled serenity of Nakupenda Sandbank into a single, well-paced six-hour adventure. Convenient hotel pickup from anywhere in Zanzibar makes it an accessible choice for solo travelers, couples, and families alike. Few tours on the island manage to pack this much variety without ever feeling rushed.
Departing by motorboat from Stone Town, you reach Changuu Island — commonly known as Prison Island — where a colony of giant Aldabra tortoises roams freely around the grounds of a 19th-century prison that was never fully used for its intended purpose. The island's beaches are calm and clean, offering a quiet moment before the day continues.
The journey then takes you to Nakupenda Sandbank, a narrow strip of white sand that appears almost to float on the Indian Ocean. A BBQ lunch featuring fresh tropical fruits is served here, and the surrounding shallow waters are ideal for snorkeling over coral reefs or simply cooling off. The sandbank is only accessible by boat, which keeps it refreshingly uncrowded.
