Underwater Navigation Guided Tour in São Miguel, Azores
Build the skills to navigate the deep with confidence, compass in hand, across the volcanic waters of the Azores.
This underwater navigation specialty course combines five knowledge development sessions with two open-water dives, giving participants a structured path to mastering directional awareness beneath the surface. The programme runs in a flexible online-plus-water format, making it accessible whether you prefer a weekend intensive or spread sessions across working hours.
Participants learn to use a dive compass correctly, read natural references on the seafloor, and measure distance through elapsed time and fin-cycle counting. Each technique builds on the last, creating a layered skillset that translates directly into safer, more enjoyable recreational diving.
The course is offered with a minimum of one participant, meaning there is no need to wait for a group to form. International certification is issued upon completion, and all necessary equipment is included throughout the training.

Course Structure
The first knowledge session covers the fundamentals of spatial awareness underwater, including why navigation matters and what tools are available to divers.
Participants study how a dive compass functions and practise reading bearings, setting reciprocal headings, and executing basic patterns in a controlled setting.
Sessions focus on using seafloor features, light direction, and current as orientation cues, alongside distance measurement via time and fin-cycle counting.
Later knowledge development sessions introduce multi-leg routes and the combination of compass work with natural references for real-dive scenarios.
The first in-water session applies compass headings and natural navigation in the open Atlantic around São Miguel under direct instructor supervision.
The second dive consolidates all techniques learned. Successful participants receive their international underwater navigation specialty certification.
