Twin Peaks ATV Tour: Reykjavik Peak and Lava Field Mountain Adventure
Two summits, one ride, and a panorama that stretches to the edge of the Arctic
The Twin Peaks ATV Tour takes riders beyond the city limits of Reykjavik and across two distinct mountain summits, combining volcanic gravel roads, rocky mountain trails, and sweeping coastal views into a single extended off-road experience. Designed for all skill levels, this tour runs for two full hours on the quad and suits both first-time riders and those looking for a more complete ATV adventure than a shorter introductory ride can offer. All-terrain bikes are fully automatic, gear is fully provided, and expert guides lead every step of the route.
The route departs from the basecamp on an asphalt road before transitioning onto gravel tracks skirting the shores of Lake Hafravatn. From there, riders climb the mountain trail to the top of Hafrafell, where the first panoramic view over Reykjavik and the surrounding bay opens up. The second leg of the tour pushes further into the volcanic outback toward Mount Ulfarsfell, where the view extends across the Reykjanes Peninsula and, on clear days, all the way to Snaefellsjokull glacier on the distant horizon.
Unlike a basic introductory tour, this itinerary incorporates steep ascents, loose rocky paths, and more technical terrain that builds rider confidence progressively over the two-hour session. The varied surface conditions, from smooth asphalt to exposed lava field tracks, reflect the genuine diversity of Iceland's volcanic landscape just outside the capital. Guides brief every participant thoroughly on safety before departure, and all necessary protective gear is supplied at the basecamp.
The tour works equally well for families, groups of friends, and solo travelers, and riders can choose between a single-rider or shared-rider option when booking. Pick-up from central Reykjavik hotels and the cruise port is available as an optional add-on, or guests can drive directly to the basecamp and meet the team at the scheduled meeting time.
Tour Highlights
Summit two distinct mountain peaks, Hafrafell and Mount Ulfarsfell, on a single continuous ATV route through the Reykjavik volcanic outback.
Take in panoramic views over the entire Reykjavik capital area, Videy Island, Esja mountain, and the Blue Mountains and Hengill ranges from the ridge tops.
On clear days, spot Snaefellsjokull glacier rising above the horizon more than a hundred kilometers across the bay.
Fully automatic quad bikes and comprehensive pre-ride safety briefings make the experience accessible to riders with no prior ATV experience.
Ride along the scenic shoreline of Lake Hafravatn before ascending into dramatic mountain terrain rarely seen by visitors staying in the city center.
All protective gear is provided at the basecamp, including helmet, gloves, overalls, ski mask, and rain gear if conditions require it.
Suitable for families, mixed-ability groups, and solo riders, with a shared-rider option available for those who prefer to ride as a pair on one ATV.
Tour Itinerary
Guests arriving by pick-up or self-drive meet the guide team at the basecamp. The first 30 minutes are spent fitting helmets, overalls, gloves, and ski masks, followed by a full safety briefing covering ATV controls, trail rules, and emergency procedures.
The ride begins on a short asphalt section before turning onto a gravel road that runs alongside the calm waters of Lake Hafravatn. This opening stretch allows newer riders to settle into the controls before the terrain becomes more demanding.
The route climbs a mountain trail to the top of Hafrafell, the first of the two peaks. From the summit, riders enjoy an elevated panorama covering the full Reykjavik urban area, the bay, and the surrounding volcanic mountain ranges.
After time at the first summit, the group descends and moves through the volcanic lava field zone, where rocky and uneven surfaces provide a more technical and engaging riding challenge than the earlier gravel roads.
The second peak, Mount Ulfarsfell, offers the most expansive view of the tour, looking out over the Reykjanes Peninsula and the Atlantic coastline. On a clear day, Snaefellsjokull glacier is visible far to the northwest across the bay.
The group returns to the basecamp where guests return gear. Those who booked the pick-up option are transferred back to their Reykjavik hotel, major bus stop, or cruise ship port.
