3-Hour Volcanic Springs ATV Tour from Reykjavik
Ride through ancient lava fields, discover geothermal wonders, and reach a hidden natural hot spring just 15 minutes from the capital.
The Volcanic Springs ATV Tour offers a 3-hour quad bike journey through one of Iceland's most geologically active zones, taking riders from Reykjavik's backlands deep into the Hengill mountain range and its surrounding lava fields.
Rated as a challenging experience, this tour is best suited for guests with a reasonable fitness level or some prior off-road riding experience. The route crosses varied terrain including rocky trails, open lava plains, and riverside paths before reaching the Innstidalur valley and its natural geothermal hot spring.
The active Hengill volcanic area frames the entire ride, with the Hellisheiðarvirkjun geothermal power plant visible along the way. On clear days, the peaks of Hekla and Eyjafjallajökull glaciers appear on the southern horizon, providing a dramatic backdrop to an already striking landscape.
Safari Quads provides all safety gear including helmets, gloves, overalls, ski masks, and rain gear. A 30-minute briefing and gear session takes place at the basecamp before every departure, ensuring all participants are prepared before hitting the trails.

Tour Itinerary
Guests are collected from selected bus stops, major hotels, and the cruise ship port in Reykjavik Centre. Those driving independently meet the team directly at the Safari Quads basecamp, located approximately 15 minutes from the city.
Upon arrival, the team outfits each participant with a helmet, gloves, overalls, ski mask, and rain gear if required. A thorough safety and riding technique session lasting approximately 30 minutes prepares guests for the terrain ahead.
The tour begins with a ride through the open backlands behind Reykjavik before the trail climbs into the foothills of the Hengill mountain range. The Hellisheidarvirkjun geothermal power plant comes into view as the volcanic landscape opens up.
Trails lead down into the Innstidalur valley, where a natural geothermal hot spring sits tucked among the lava formations. When temperatures are suitable, guests have the opportunity to stop and bathe in the warm waters.
The route ascends to the peak of the Hengill range, offering a 360-degree panorama across volcanic terrain. On clear days the view extends south to Myrdalsjokull and Eyjafjallajokull, as well as toward the south coast beaches.
After 3 hours on the ATVs, riders return to the basecamp. Guests who opted for the pickup service are then transported back to their hotel or designated stop in Reykjavik Centre, completing a total experience of approximately 4 to 4.5 hours.
