Þórsmörk Nature Reserve Hike | Day Tour from Midgard
Venture into a glacial valley where ancient birch forests, hidden canyons, and sweeping glacier views await.
A Þórsmörk hike brings you into one of Iceland's most celebrated wilderness areas, a valley cradled between three glaciers and filled with dramatic landscapes that few places on Earth can rival. Local guides from Midgard lead small groups along trails chosen to match the day's weather and conditions. Every outing offers a genuinely distinct experience of this remarkable reserve.
Þórsmörk holds deep significance for Icelanders, who have long regarded it as a place to connect with nature in its most unfiltered form. Your guide will share the sagas and stories tied to the land, offering context that goes well beyond what a map or guidebook could provide. The valley's birch woodlands, glacial rivers, and ridgeline panoramas create a setting that rewards slow, attentive travel.
Routes on this tour range from 6 to 12 kilometers, with three to four hours of active hiking and elevation gains between 350 and 800 meters. Trails wind through uneven wilderness terrain, rocky paths, and canyon floors, so a moderate level of fitness is recommended. Guides adjust the route based on group ability and prevailing conditions to ensure a safe and rewarding day.
The season runs from May through October, when the reserve's vegetation is at its most vivid and the trails are fully accessible. Guests under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and the minimum age for participation is 13 years. Lunchboxes from Midgard Restaurant can be added at the time of booking.

How the Day Unfolds
The group assembles at Midgard Base Camp in Hvolsvöllur, where guides brief participants on the day's chosen route, gear checks, and safety considerations. Travel to Þórsmörk follows, with the journey itself offering views of the southern Icelandic lowlands and the glaciers ahead.
Upon arriving at Þórsmörk, the group enters the nature reserve and begins the trail selected for the day. The opening section typically passes through birch forest or along a glacial riverbed, easing the group into the terrain before elevation is gained.
The mid-section of the hike takes the group onto ridgelines or through canyon passages depending on the chosen route, such as Tindfjallahringur, Hvannárgil, or Hestagötur. This is where the most expansive views of the surrounding glaciers and valleys typically open up.
A natural break is taken at a scenic point along the trail, giving the group time to rest, eat, and take in the surroundings. Guests who pre-ordered a lunchbox from Midgard Restaurant will have it available at this point.
The guide leads the group back along the return section of the chosen loop, often through contrasting terrain to the outward leg. The descent brings the reserve's quieter, more sheltered corners into view before reaching the trailhead.
The group travels back to Midgard Base Camp in Hvolsvöllur, completing the full day tour. Total duration from departure to return is approximately seven to eight hours.
