Glacier Journey on Sólheimajokull Glacier
Walk the ancient ice of one of Iceland's most dramatic outlet glaciers on this guided 3-hour hiking and photo tour.
Sólheimajökull Glacier hiking places you at the heart of Iceland's ever-shifting ice landscape, where crevasses, blue ice formations, and moulins create a constantly evolving natural environment. Guided by experienced professionals, this tour is designed for all skill levels, from first-time visitors to seasoned outdoor enthusiasts. A curated photo package is included, delivered within 14 days of your adventure.
Sólheimajökull is an outlet glacier of the larger Mýrdalsjökull ice cap, located on Iceland's South Coast roughly 2.5 hours from Reykjavík. The glacier has been shaped over centuries by volcanic activity and glacial movement, producing a terrain unlike anywhere else on Earth. Walking its surface reveals layers of volcanic ash embedded in the ice, a record of eruptions stretching back thousands of years.
The route takes you through formations including ice ridges, deep crevasses, and vertical meltwater shafts known as moulins. Your guide provides context about glacial science, including how climate patterns influence the glacier's movement and appearance from season to season. Each visit produces a distinct experience, as the ice surface never remains the same.
All necessary equipment is provided at the glacier, and fitting assistance is given before the hike begins. The tour concludes back at the parking lot, where participants can reflect on the journey before departing. An optional private pickup from Reykjavík is available for groups seeking a seamless full-day itinerary.

Tour Itinerary
Participants meet their guide at the Sólheimajökull Glacier parking lot, located at Sólheimajökull, 871 Vík. Arrival 15 minutes before the scheduled start time is recommended to complete check-in and use restroom facilities, as none are available at the glacier itself.
The group boards a vehicle for a brief 5-minute drive toward the glacier's edge. During this transit, the guide introduces the surrounding landscape and the geological history of Sólheimajökull.
At the glacier edge, the guide distributes and assists with all equipment, including crampons, an ice axe, harness, and helmet. Rental hiking boots are available for those who require them.
The group ascends onto the glacier surface and navigates through crevasses, ice ridges, and moulins under guide supervision. Ample time is allocated for photography and exploration of the glacier's distinctive features.
After the hike, the group descends to the glacier's edge, removes gear, and returns by vehicle to the parking lot. Participants say farewell to their guide and depart with their memories and an upcoming photo package.
