The Sete Cidades walking tour takes you through one of the most visually compelling volcanic landscapes in the Azores, combining crater lake views, highland ridgelines, and dense cryptomeria forest within a single half-day outing. This route is guided by experienced local naturalists who know the terrain and its biodiversity intimately. It is an accessible yet rewarding option for those who want to experience western São Miguel beyond the main viewpoints.

Starting from the briefing point at Picos de Aventura, the trail leads past Lagoa das Éguas and Lagoa Rasa before ascending to Pico das Éguas, one of the higher summits in the region. From this vantage point, walkers gain panoramic views across the central plateau of São Miguel, with crater lakes visible in multiple directions. The ascent is gradual and manageable for participants with a basic level of fitness.

The descent follows a forest path through Cryptomeria japonica woodland, a species widely planted across the Azores and visually distinctive with its tall straight trunks and filtered light. The route concludes near Lagoa das Empadadas before returning to the start. Along the way, guides point out endemic plant species, many of which are rarely spotted outside protected zones.
