Jeep Tour to the Northeast of São Miguel — A Full-Day Journey Through Wild Landscapes
From rugged northern cliffs to ancient laurel forests and the island's very first settlement.
This full-day Jeep tour of São Miguel's Northeast takes you beyond the well-worn tourist paths and into the raw, dramatic interior of the Azores' largest island. Departing from Ponta Delgada, the route traces the northern coast, climbs through protected forest, and ends with a stop at the island's historic first capital.
The journey begins with a scenic drive to the Miradouro de Santa Iria, where the sweeping views of the North Coast reveal agricultural fields cascading down toward the Atlantic. The contrast between the cultivated land and the open ocean is striking and sets the tone for the day ahead.
After visiting the waterfall at Ribeira dos Caldeirões, one of São Miguel's most picturesque natural areas, the tour continues to the Vila do Nordeste for lunch. The afternoon crossing of the Serra da Tronqueira forest road is a highlight in its own right, passing through towering trees and patches of endemic Laurisilva forest before descending to Povoação, the island's oldest settlement. The return leg follows the southern coast through Vila Franca do Campo, São Miguel's first capital, before arriving back in Ponta Delgada.

Itinerary
The tour departs from the Picos de Aventura briefing point in Ponta Delgada. After a short introduction, the Jeep heads northeast along the island's interior roads toward the North Coast.
The first major stop is the viewpoint at Santa Iria, one of the most dramatic lookout points on São Miguel's North Coast. From here, visitors can observe the rugged cliffs and patchwork of green agricultural fields that slope down toward the sea.
The route continues to the Ribeira dos Caldeirões area, where a waterfall flows through a landscape of old stone mills and lush vegetation. This protected natural park is one of the Northeast's most visited natural features.
The group stops for lunch in the coastal village of Nordeste, the easternmost point of São Miguel. This is an opportunity to sample regional food and explore the village square.
The afternoon route cuts through the Serra da Tronqueira, a highland forest road flanked by large trees and endemic Laurisilva patches. The road descends into Povoação, the oldest settlement on the island.
The final stop is Vila Franca do Campo, São Miguel's original capital, before the Jeep follows the southern coastline back to Ponta Delgada. The return journey offers additional views of the island's southern cliffs and shoreline.
