Sea Turtle Observation Night Tour in Cape Verde
Witness one of nature's most remarkable events on the shores of Sal Island
This guided sea turtle nesting tour takes you to the beaches of Cape Verde after dark to observe loggerhead turtles completing their ancient nesting ritual in their natural habitat. Available from June through October, this three-hour experience is led by knowledgeable local guides who prioritize the safety and well-being of the turtles throughout the visit. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, making the experience accessible for visitors across the island.
Cape Verde's beaches rank among the most significant nesting grounds for loggerhead sea turtles in the Atlantic. The islands of Sal and Boa Vista host hundreds of nesting females each season, offering a rare opportunity to witness a process that has continued unchanged for millions of years. The beaches visited on this tour, including Kite Beach, Serra Negra, and Algodoeiro, are among the most active nesting sites during the summer months.
Responsible wildlife observation is at the heart of this experience. Guides follow strict protocols to avoid disturbing nesting turtles, including limiting light use and maintaining respectful distances until the turtle has settled. The result is an authentic and ethically conducted encounter that leaves no trace on the beach or its inhabitants.
The tour operates in small groups transported by 4x4 pickup or minivan, keeping noise and disruption to a minimum. This approach also allows guides to give personal attention to each participant, answering questions and providing context throughout the evening. The experience is rated easy in terms of physical difficulty and is suitable for most ages.

Tour Itinerary
Your guide collects you from your hotel in the evening. The group travels together by 4x4 pickup or minivan to the designated beach for the night.
Upon arrival, your guide provides a detailed introduction covering sea turtle biology, nesting behavior, and the conduct expected during the observation. This briefing ensures the experience is both educational and respectful toward the animals.
The group waits quietly near the shoreline. Sea turtles are cautious animals and will only emerge from the water when they feel fully safe, so patience is key during this phase.
Watch as the turtle moves up the beach, selects a nesting site, and begins digging. If the initial location is not suitable, she will search for another spot before committing to the process.
The turtle lays between 65 and 100 eggs, then carefully covers and camouflages the nest before making her return to the sea. This entire process unfolds naturally and without interference.
After the nesting observation concludes, the group is transported back to the hotel, completing the three-hour experience.
