Sunset Hiking to Mount Lion
A scenic coastal trek along Sal's west shore, ending at Mount Lion in time for golden hour.
This sunset hike on Sal Island follows the island's rugged west coastline from Santa Maria to Mount Lion, passing through some of the most visually striking landscapes Cape Verde has to offer. The route is moderate in difficulty and is guided throughout, making it accessible for active travelers who want to experience the island beyond the beach.
Departing from the lively town of Santa Maria, the trail threads along the Atlantic shoreline, offering uninterrupted views of the ocean as the afternoon light shifts. Stops at Ponta Preta and Calheta Beach provide natural breakpoints where hikers can pause, take in the scenery, and catch their breath before continuing north.
The final leg of the journey brings hikers to the slopes of Mount Lion, where the ascent rewards with panoramic views across the coastline and open sea. Itinerary
Gather with your guide and fellow hikers near the Morabeza Hotel in Santa Maria. The group departs together along the seashore heading towards the west coast.
The first scheduled stop is at Ponta Preta, a well-known coastal point with striking rock formations and views across open water. Take time to observe the scenery before continuing.
The trail continues north to Calheta, a quieter beach away from the main tourist areas. This section offers a contrast in coastline character and a chance to rest before the next leg.
Hikers reach the sheltered bay of Murdeira, where calmer waters and a more tranquil atmosphere make it a natural resting point. The beach here is suitable for a short break.
The group begins the ascent to the summit of Mount Lion, timed to arrive at the top as the sun approaches the horizon. Panoramic views of the coastline and sea unfold from the peak.
After the sunset, the group descends from Mount Lion and makes its way back to Santa Maria. Transfer to your accommodation marks the end of the experience.
