Ria Formosa Natural Park · Algarve, Portugal
Ria Formosa Boat Tour: Culatra Island & Deserta Beach
Sail the calm inner channels of the Ria Formosa and step ashore on two barrier islands shaped by tide and tradition.
The Ria Formosa boat tour is a two-hour journey through one of Portugal's most protected coastal lagoon systems, departing from the historic fishing port of Olhão. On board, an experienced captain narrates the ecology and human history of the park as the boat traces its way through sheltered natural channels.
The itinerary includes two island stops — Armona and Culatra — each offering a distinct character, from wide Atlantic-facing beaches to a close-knit fishing village where roughly one thousand residents live year-round. The pace is unhurried, and the landscape shifts constantly between open sandbanks, dense cordgrass beds and mirror-flat lagoon water.
Boats are organized to accommodate a maximum of two languages per departure, keeping the on-board experience coherent for every guest. The tour is available as a shared small-group excursion or as a private booking, and the captain adjusts stop order when tides or weather conditions make an alternative sequence more rewarding.

Tour Itinerary
The tour sets off from the port of Olhão, giving guests their first views of the city's distinctive North African-influenced architecture from the water. The captain introduces the Ria Formosa ecosystem as the boat enters the lagoon channels.
After around twenty minutes of sailing, the boat docks at Armona Island. Guests can walk to the Atlantic-facing beach, explore the dune vegetation or photograph the surrounding landscape before reboarding.
The boat continues through the lagoon toward Culatra Island, passing tidal sandbanks and cordgrass flats where wading birds are frequently spotted. The captain provides commentary on the area's biodiversity and fishing heritage during the crossing.
Guests step ashore in Culatra's fishing village to walk its quiet streets, browse small local shops or sit at one of the waterfront cafes. The captain can recommend specific restaurants and, on request, assist with reservations.
The boat heads back through the lagoon via a different channel, offering additional views of the natural park. The return leg provides a final opportunity to observe birds, spot marine life and take in the scenery before docking.
