Os Segredos do Sotavento
Salt pans, fresh fish markets, and medieval walls along the lesser-known eastern Algarve coast
This full-day tour reveals the authentic character of the Eastern Algarve Sotavento, taking you through working salt flats, a lively seafood market, a traditional fishing village, and one of the most historically layered cities in southern Portugal.
The Sotavento coast stretches east of Faro toward the Spanish border and remains far less visited than the busy resort strips of the central Algarve. That relative quiet preserves a way of life tied to the sea, the salt, and centuries of maritime trade. You will encounter that reality at first hand throughout the day.
From the delicate craft of artisanal salt harvesting to the cobbled streets of Tavira, each stop builds a coherent picture of a region shaped by its natural lagoon system and its Roman, Moorish, and Christian heritage. Lunch at a locally run restaurant, where the fish arrives from the boats that morning, anchors the experience firmly in the present.

Itinerary
The day begins at a traditional salt pan nestled within the Ria Formosa Natural Park. You will learn how sea salt has been harvested here for centuries using methods that remain largely unchanged, and observe the birdlife that thrives in this protected estuary landscape.
Next comes Olhão, a bustling fishing port with a distinctly North African architectural character. The covered market halls overflow with local seafood, seasonal fruit, vegetables, and cured products — a vivid snapshot of daily life along this coast.
Midday brings a sit-down lunch at a locally owned restaurant in the region. The menu centres on fresh fish and seafood landed that morning, reflecting the straightforward, ingredient-led cooking that defines Algarvian cuisine at its best.
The afternoon begins with a visit to Santa Luzia, a small coastal village where the octopus fishing tradition remains very much alive. The waterfront, the coloured boats, and the drying pots create a scene that has changed little in generations.
The tour concludes in Tavira, widely regarded as one of the most graceful towns in the Algarve. You will walk the castle walls, cross the ancient Roman pedestrian bridge, and have the opportunity to step inside some of the town's 22 historic churches before the return journey.
