Pompeii and Vesuvius from the Amalfi Coast
Walk through an ancient city frozen in time, then stand at the rim of the volcano that buried it.
This full-day excursion combines two of southern Italy's most compelling destinations into a single, expertly guided journey: the Pompeii and Vesuvius day trip from the Amalfi Coast brings together 2,000 years of history and raw geological power in one unforgettable outing.
Departing directly from your accommodation, you travel to the UNESCO-listed archaeological site of Pompeii, where a qualified archaeological guide leads you through the western quarter of the ancient Roman city. You will walk past the Basilica, the Forum, the thermal baths, a working bakery, and private residential houses, all preserved beneath volcanic ash since 79 AD.
After Pompeii, the tour continues by road up the slopes of Mount Vesuvius to an altitude of 1,000 metres above sea level. From the main square, you follow the Gran Cone path on foot to the crater rim, where the Gulf of Naples spreads out in every direction below you.
The difficulty level is moderate, meaning some walking on uneven terrain is involved at both sites. Comfortable, closed-toe footwear is strongly recommended for the crater path and the cobbled streets of Pompeii.

Itinerary
Your guide collects you directly from your hotel or rental on the Amalfi Coast. The drive north toward Pompeii takes approximately one hour depending on traffic and your exact departure point.
Your archaeological guide leads the group through the western district of the ancient city. Key stops include the Basilica, the Forum, the public thermal baths, a Roman bakery, and several well-preserved private homes.
After the Pompeii visit, the group boards the vehicle and travels up the volcano road to the main car park and square at 1,000 metres above sea level. The ascent by road offers increasingly expansive views of the surrounding landscape.
From the square, you walk the Gran Cone path to the crater rim. The trail is approximately 860 metres long and takes around 20 to 30 minutes at a moderate pace over volcanic gravel.
After time at the crater for views and exploration, the group descends and boards the vehicle for the return journey. Drop-off is at your original accommodation or an agreed meeting point.
