Northern Lights and Aurora Basecamp Tour from Reykjavík
A guided journey into Iceland's aurora wilderness, combining science, storytelling, and the hunt for the natural Northern Lights.
This Northern Lights tour from Reykjavík takes small groups into the lava fields of Reykjanes Geopark, where a purpose-built observatory and interactive Dark Park prepare every visitor to understand, photograph, and witness the aurora with their own eyes.
Departing from Perlan and select city pickup points, the route heads away from urban light pollution to Aurora Basecamp — a facility designed specifically around aurora observation. Inside, six large glass tubes reproduce the colors and fluid motion of the Northern Lights, giving guests an immersive reference point before stepping outside.
The Dark Park, housed under a dome, walks visitors through the atmospheric science and cultural mythology behind the aurora. Eye adaptation happens naturally during this stage, which meaningfully improves a person's ability to detect faint auroral activity once outside in the lava field.
If viewing conditions at the basecamp are not optimal, the guide continues the search, driving to wherever the aurora is most likely visible that night. A complimentary hot drink, open fire, and a warm lounge ensure comfort regardless of how long the hunt takes.

Tour Itinerary
The tour collects guests from select bus stops and hotels in central Reykjavík, with an optional pickup directly outside Perlan. The collection window spans approximately 30 minutes to accommodate all stops.
The journey to Aurora Basecamp takes roughly 20 to 30 minutes. During the drive, the guide introduces the group to the Northern Lights — their causes, behavior, and what conditions favor a good sighting.
Guests explore the observatory's six glass tubes containing captured aurora simulations, offering a close and controlled introduction to the lights' colors and movement patterns. The facility sits purposefully away from light pollution in the lava fields.
Inside the dome, an interactive display covers aurora science, folklore, and practical photography guidance. Eye adaptation occurs naturally during this indoor stage, sharpening the group's ability to detect subtle auroral activity outside.
The group steps into the open lava fields to observe the sky. Guests can warm up by the outdoor fire or retreat to the Aurora Lounge for a complimentary hot drink. If conditions are not optimal here, the guide leads the group to the best available location.
The guide drops guests back at the city pickup points. Depending on weather and aurora activity, the group typically returns between 11:30 PM and 1:00 AM.
